The caring nature of the Slippery Rock University campus will be
displayed Thursday [Dec. 5] when hundreds of Christmas gifts are
gathered for delivery to some 250 needy Butler County children. A
“Gather-the-Gifts Reception” will be held from 10:30
a.m. to noon in the Russell Wright Alumni House as part of the 13th
annual “Project Christmas Elf.”
The event will provide opportunities for excellent feature photos,
including a performance by children enrolled in the SRU/SGA Day
Care program who will be on hand to provide holiday music. The
gifts were purchased by university offices, departments, faculty,
staff and students as well as community groups and individuals in a
program designed to provide Christmas wishes to less fortunate
county youngsters.
“Project Christmas Elf,” started in 1989, is now
directed by SRU’s Institute for Community, Service-Learning
and Nonprofit Leadership. Since early-November needy children have
been “adopted” by those who agreed to fulfill their
holiday “wish lists.”
Following Thursday’s reception, the gifts will be delivered
to the Salvation Army, which will handle final distribution to the
children. those planning to staff the reception, or needing more
information, are asked to call 724-738-2199.
