  • Identify the type of student that would fit into your practice site easily.

  • Prior to the beginning of the clinical experience, review he student's identified personal goals, clinical goals, and experience level of the student with the student. The student should provide you with a list of his/her personal goals or objectives.

  • Expose the students to educational experiences based on their experience level and on the course/clinical objectives.

  • Assist the student in identifying his/her goals, strengths, and weaknesses.

  • Be specific with the student about the schedule you expect them to keep. Include office, on-call, hospital, and other meetings when appropriate.

  • Introduce students to your patients as a nurse practitioner student who is working under your supervision and in a manner that will be comfortable for both you, your patients, and the student.

  • You may want to make adjustments in your activities to accommodate the educational needs of the student, such as pausing briefly between patients for consultation with the student.

  • Include your staff in the education of the student (i.e., billing, lab, and scheduling issues).

  • Ask program faculty for any information that would be helpful in precepting.

  • Notify the Director, Dr. Joyce Penrose, at 724-738-2323, if there are any problems that you may be having with the student.
