The student must take an active role in the educational process during the preceptorship. The following guidelines are provided in preparing students for clinical experiences.

  1. Prior to the first clinical day, students review the clinical experience objectives for the course and are able to discuss them with you in light of previous background and personal educational needs.

  2. The students should discuss with you prior clinical experience and level of clinical development. Students are asked to provide you with a one-page resume. This may be helpful to both you and the patients.

  3. The student should be able to introduce himself/herself to your office staff and patients and answer questions about the role of the nurse practitioner.

  4. Students should dress appropriately and are expected to have a lab coat and name badge.

  5. The student should utilize the clinical time to the fullest by using any leisure time to review literature that is in the office library, using references books, such as the PDR and clinical medicine books.

  6. The student may use clinical time to learn lab, technical or office management skills when not engaged in clinical patient care.

  7. Students should be able to describe experiences that would contribute to their growth as nurse practitioner students. As long as the clinical goals are met, extra activities can be planned by you and the student.

  8. Students should be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and discuss them with you, working to improve in the areas of weaknesses.

  9. Preceptors may want to discuss their preferred style of teaching, communicating, and learning.

  10. Each student is expected to carry professional liability insurance, $1,000,000/$3,000,000 minimum, as a condition of being enrolled in the Clarion, Edinboro, and Slippery Rock Universities Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
