Medical Mycology
Biology 215

Instructors: Thomas W. Gaither

Objectives: A lecture and laboratory course for medical technology majors which emphasizes the fungi of medical importance. One section of this course is offered during the spring semester.

Prerequisites: Medical Microbiology (Biol 210)

Credit Value: 1

Contact Time: Two 50 minute lectures and one 3 hour laboratory for 5 weeks during the semester.

Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of the course the student should be:

  • acquainted with fungi that are potential human pathogens
  • familiar with the morphological and physiological characteristics that distinguish medically significant fungi
  • capable of integrating the textual considerations of fungal biology with laboratory experiences
  • capable of recognizing common laboratory contaminants and fungi that cause non-disseminated, superficial and cutaneous infections
