SRU’S ANNUAL ‘TAKE 5’ CONCERT TO FEATURE FACULTY, GUEST ARTISTS IN PRESENTATION OF CLASSICS AND JAZZ FEB. 2

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The annual “Take 5” concert, featuring both classical and jazz selections, will open this semester’s music department concert season with a free performance at 4 p.m. Feb. 2 in Swope Recital Hall.

The classical portion of the program will be offered by the Symphony Wind Quintet with SRU faculty members Stacey Steele on flute, and Gary Purifoy on oboe, joined by guest artists Charles Norton on clarinet, Mary Gibbons on bassoon, and Denise Mintier on horn.  Their selections will include "Cuban Dances," a series of Cuban folk music arranged by Ignacio Cervantes, and "Quintet," Klughardt’s classic example of woodwind music. An arrangement by Jack Graham, Steele's brother, of "Marsch" from the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Hindemith is also planned.

The program’s second half features the Faculty Jazz Quintet, including SRU faculty members Terry Steele on saxophone, Steve Hawk on trumpet, Glenn Utsch on piano, Jeff Mangone on bass, and David Glover on drums. The quintet will perform their own interpretations of jazz standards in addition to two original compositions by Terry Steele.  The jazz group has been selected to perform at this years' Pennsylvania Music Educator's Conference set for April.
