SRU STUDENT DONATES 30 MONTHS OF HAIR GROWTH
TO HELP CHILDREN WITH MEDICAL HAIR LOSS BUILD
SELF-ESTEEM
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- An off-hand challenge from a friend headed to
the Army and facing the dreaded haircut was all Adam Ward, a
Slippery Rock University secondary education major, needed to
launch a 30-month avoidance of haircuts. The "growing" ended Monday
when Ward had his hair cut to benefit children facing
medical-related hair loss.
Ward,
a junior from West View, had all but an inch of his shoulder-length
locks shorn for forwarding to Locks of Love. The Florida-based
organization provides free hairpieces to financially disadvantaged
children with medical problems that have resulted in hair loss.
More than 850 children have benefited since the group's inception
in 1997. The group says hairpieces build self-esteem and
confidence.
Ward,
who has not had his haircut since fall 2000, hopes others will
follow his lead. He says he a recent television magazine show
detailing the work of Locks of Love is what changed his mind. "I
had about 11 inches, and as they explained it, I knew my hair could
help others."
His
stylist told him his contribution provided enough hair for two,
children's wigs.
