» 'GHOSTS' TO CONREGATE AT SRU'S OLD STONE HOUSE OCT. 24-25
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The ghosts of western Pennsylvania will congregate from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24-25 at the Old Stone House, one of Butler County’s most recognized landmarks, as Slippery Rock University presents its annual “Halloween Ghost Story Tour” program.

» 11 SRU MUSIC STUDENTS TO VIE FOR CHAD WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Eleven Slippery Rock University music students will vie for top honors in the annual Chad Williamson Memorial Scholarship Competition set for 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in SRU’s Swope Recital Hall.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s annual Stadium Echoes Concert, presented by the University’s Marching Pride and offering highlights from this year’s football game half-time shows, will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in Morrow Field House.

» BUDDHIST MONKS TO EXPLAIN MYSTIQUE OF TIBET DURING 3-DAY SRU VISIT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The mystique of Tibet will be brought to the Slippery Rock University campus Tuesday when seven Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery located in southern India, open a three-day visit offering students and area residents a glimpse of their lives, including monastic dances, music, their religion and public healing and empowerment ceremonies.

Slippery Rock University’s Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center will host a National Wheelchair Basketball Association tournament Saturday and Sunday [Oct. 19-20], including the inaugural game of a new women's team, the Steel City Starz. The tournament will offer excellent feature story/photo opportunities.

» FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF SLIPPERY ROCK AND SRU HONOR SCHOLARS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Twenty-two high school juniors and 26 seniors have distinguished themselves academically and qualified for $8,000 scholarships to Slippery Rock University, made possible by a $1 million commitment from The First Bank National of Slippery Rock.  The program aims to keep talented young people in western Pennsylvania during their college years and beyond.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University President Dr. G. Warren Smith announced today that former Slippery Rock Mayor Howard Meyer and the Slippery Rock University Foundation, Inc., have agreed to a major land gift that will provide a significant contribution to the “Village at Slippery Rock” revitalization project.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Nationally acclaimed scholar in women’s history Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will discuss her new book “Sisters in Spirit: Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Influence on Early American Feminists” when she addresses the Slippery Rock University community at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 31.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s program in therapeutic recreation has received the 2002 Award for Excellence in Education from the American Therapeutic Recreation Association – a national honor recognizing it as one of the best programs in the country.

» Open House Planned for New Teacher Certification in Environmental Education
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s North Hills Site in Wexford will host an open house 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 12 to spotlight its new teacher certification in environmental education. Education Dean Dr. Jay Hertzog will be on hand to explain the university’s principal certification as well.  

» PARADE OF FLAGS TO OPEN SRU’S 28TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DINNER
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A parade of international flags representing the home countries of Slippery Rock University international students will open the university’s 28th annual International Dinner set for Nov. 9 in the University Union.

» PENNSYLVANIA’S STATE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO HONOR FOUR SRU BENEFACTORS WITH EBERLY HONORS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Four Slippery Rock University supporters – Stanley and Marilyn Kraus, both formerly of Lawrence County, and  Dr. Constance Smith and Ramona Smith, both of Butler County, and– have been named by the Fund for the Advancement of the State System of Higher Education, Inc., to receive this year’s Eberly medals, the highest awards presented by Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dr. William Jordan, director of Princeton University’s Program in Medieval Studies and an nationally recognized expert in the field, will detail “The Making of Europe” when he addresses the Slippery Rock University community as the first speaker in a faculty seminar series planned as part of the university’s development of a European studies minor.

» SIX NAMED MARJORIE STEPHENSON SCHOLARS AT SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Marjorie Stephenson Scholarships, created by the university’s former librarian, have been presented to six students for the 2002-03 academic year. Each scholarship is for $500 to $1,000.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Thanks to a federal grant, Slippery Rock University’s daycare center on campus will make it easier for local parents to attend college by offering a sliding-scale fee for childcare, based on income.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University dance faculty will share the stage with guest artists from Kent State University, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, including artists-in-residence Attack Theatre from Pittsburgh, as part of the annual “SRU Faculty and Guest Artist’s Dance Concert” at 8 p.m. Oct. 19.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Free, or low cost, screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and depression, as well as flu shots will be among the services provided at Slippery Rock University’s Oct. 15 “Healthfest 2002” presented as an intergenerational event aimed at bringing better health and information to students and the community while also spotlighting the university’s expanding health-related academic programs.

» SRU ‘TEACHER JOB FAIR’ TO LINK STUDENTS TO TEACHING OPENINGS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio college students majoring in education and nearing graduation are invited to join in Slippery Rock University’s “2002 Teacher Job Fair” set for Nov. 13. More than 65 school districts from across the U.S. will be on hand to conduct interviews and accept resumes.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Just in time for Halloween – and then again for Christmas -- Slippery Rock University’s Office of Continuing Education will offer theater day-trips to the Mt. Hope Theatre and Winery in Cornwall.

» SRU GETS $200,000 FEDERAL GRANT TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Educating students about violence against women, including dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, will be the focus of education programs made possible by a $199,853 grant to Slippery Rock University from the U.S. Department of Justice.

» SRU JAZZ ENSEMBLE TO RELEASE NEW CD - ‘BACK TO THE STATES’  AT CONCERT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Following its successful, two-week spring tour of Europe, the Slippery Rock University Jazz Ensemble will release a 10-track CD featuring selections presented in Paris, France, and Saluzzo, Lucca and Cesena, Italy, as part of its “Back to the States” concert set for 8 p.m. Oct. 16.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Two, intensive six-weekend “Paralegal Certificate Course” programs designed to train students to assist trial attorneys in courtroom litigation will be offered by Slippery Rock University’s Office of Continuing Education.

» SRU PRESIDENT LAUDED FOR ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE
SLIPPERY ROCK,  Pa. -- The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has elected Slippery Rock University President Dr. G. Warren Smith to the rank of AAAS Fellow in recognition of his “distinguished efforts on behalf of the advancement of science and its applications.”

» SRU TO ‘FOCUS ON FRENCH’ FOR WEEK WITH FOOD, FILMS AND CULTURE
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University students from French-speaking countries will detail the language and culture of their home country as part of a campuswide “Focus on French” weeklong program sponsored by the university’s department of modern languages and cultures in conjunction with the American Association of Teachers of French.

» SRU TO INDUCT 20 STUDENTS INTO NATIONAL GREEK HONOR SOCIETY
SLIPPERY ROCK. – Twenty academic achievers involved in Greek life at Slippery Rock University will be inducted into Gamma Sigma Alpha, the national Greek honor society, at ceremonies set for 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Russell Wright Alumni House.

» SRU TO SPOTLIGHT CLASSICAL MUSIC OF INDIA IN OCT. 23 SITAR CONCERT
 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Purbayan Chatterjee, widely recognized in India as an accomplished sitar player, will offer the classical music of India at an 8 p.m. Oct. 23 concert in Slippery Rock University’s Swope Recital Hall.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Three area agencies involved in feeding the needy will benefit from this year’s “Empty Bowls” dinner set for Monday [Oct. 21] and sponsored by Slippery Rock University’s Institute for Community, Service Learning and Nonprofit Leadership.

» SRU’S UPB TO BRING POP BAND ‘GOO GOO DOLLS’ TO CAMPUS FRIDAY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Goo Goo Dolls, once called “America’s best known, unknown band” has been playing across the USA gaining success for the past eight years, and Nov. 10 will play an 8 p.m. concert on the Slippery Rock University campus.

» Year of Rachel Carson – SRU PLANS PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE WOMEN TO CONSIDER SCIENCE CAREERS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – As part of the on-going “Year of Rachel Carson” in Slippery Rock and at Slippery Rock University, an all-day workshop titled “Rachel Carson as a Role Model: Encouraging Females to Consider Science Careers” will be held at the university Oct. 19. The program is funded, in part, by the National Science Foundation.
