CLARION, Pa. -- The nationally ranked Slippery Rock
University baseball team recorded its sixth straight doubleheader
sweep and extended its current win streak to a school-record 13
games Saturday afternoon as they swept Clarion University 2-1 and
8-0.
The Rock, ranked 14th in this week's National Collegiate Baseball
Writers of America national poll and tied for 19th in the
Collegiate Baseball magazine poll, improved its record to 22-5
overall, 6-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western
Division action.
Clarion, who came into the game having won six of its last seven
games, now falls to 7-14 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC-Western
Division.
Senior Mike Sikorski (White Oak/McKeesport HS) (4-1)
and junior Steve Norris (Clearfield/Clearfield HS)
(4-0) both pitched complete game two-hitters.
In the first game of the double header The Rock scored both of
their runs on solo homeruns. Senior catcher Luke Mollis
(Charleroi/Charleroi HS) hit his first of the year in
third inning while sophomore left fielder Matt Kozusko
(Latrobe/Latrobe HS) hit his third to put The Rock up in
the seventh inning.
In the second game, The Rock bats came alive as they hit four home
runs. Senior second baseman Alan Reichl
(Pittsburgh/Montour HS) hit a pair of solo home runs.
Also contributing in the effort junior right fielder Jason
Curry (Slippery Rock/Slippery Rock HS) hit a two run
homer and junior designated hitter Ben Marzullo
(Brookville/Brookville HS) hit his team-leading
seventh of the season.
With the wins Saturday, The Rock improved its record vs. NCAA
Division II North Atlantic Regional rivals to 13-3.
The Rock will be back in action on Monday April 7th as they play
host to Gannon in a 1 p.m. twinbill at Jack Critchfield Park
rescheduled from last Monday, March 31.
