SRU’S EARTH FEST OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, WITH
ECOLOGICAL FOCUS --APRIL 26 EVENTS OPEN TO THE
PUBLIC
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – Free kites for children, activities with turtles,
seed planting and clean water workshops are just some of the fun
planned for Earth Fest on April 26 at Slippery
RockUniversity’s Robert A. Macoskey Center for
Sustainable Systems Research and Education.
Open
to the public, events will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the
center Harmony Road, across from N. Kerr Thompson Football
Stadium.
Earth
Fest, which showcases SRU’s strong reputation for
environmental science and sustainability studies, is partnership
with Kaleidoscope, the university’s celebration of the arts
running April 22 through May 3. Earth Fest will include an
ecological art exhibition from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., a theater
performance and several live bands.
"Earth
Fest includes something for everyone, with an ecological focus,"
Macoskey director Thomas Reynolds says. “All of the
events are family-friendly, many scheduled especially for
youth.”
The “Earth and Art Children’s Fair”
includes:
•
“Kite Making for Kids of All Ages,” 11 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. (Free kites to first 50 children.)
•
“The Ultimate Turtle Experience,” 1 to 2
p.m.
•
“Freddie the Fish,” 3 to 3:30 p.m.
•
Tours of Macoskey Center, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Throughout
its 12-day run, Kaleidoscope visitors will hear speakers, take in a
flute or wind ensemble concert, comedy acts, Civil War
re-enactments, or enjoy children's activities. Several speakers are
nationally known, including Sherman Alexie, a Native-American
writer, dramatist and poet; Kevin Burke, an Irish-fiddler; and
Elizabeth Hodes, a New York
actress/singer/dancer.
A
quilting showcase, with 60 quilts, will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
April 26 at the Slippery Rock Township Building.
