ROCK HARDBALLERS SWEEP PAIR FROM WEST LIBERTY STATE

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from visiting West Liberty State (W. Va.) on Monday, winning the first game 3-0 and taking the nightcap 15-3 at Jack Critchfield Park.

The Rock is now 33-8 on the year and has won six straight games and 25 of 29 games since returning from its spring trip to Florida in early March.

West Liberty State fell to 17-21 with the losses.

Sophomore right-hander Rocky D’Angelo (Shaler/Shaler HS) tossed a one-hit shutout in Monday’s opening game. D’Angelo (4-1) struck out four and walked one in recording his fourth complete game of the season.

Senior second baseman Alan Reichl (Pittsburgh/Montour HS) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while junior third baseman Chase Rowe (Saxonburg/Knoch HS) and sophomore left fielder Matt Kozusko (Latrobe/Greater Latrobe HS) had an RBI single each.

The Rock scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 2-0 lead in the second game and then added eight tallies in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Sophomore first baseman Aaron Levonick (Osceola Mills/Phillipsburg-Osceola HS) led The Rock’s Game 2 effort with a two-run double, a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in four trips to the plate.

Junior designated hitter Billy Wolfe (Franklin/Franklin HS) was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for The Rock, while senior center fielder Joe Neidrick (Osceola Mills/Phillipsburg-Osceola HS) was 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Nick Armstrong (Murraysville/Franklin Regional HS) was the Game 2 winning pitcher. He allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits, struck out eight and walked three in six innings. Senior right-hander Kevin Dvorchak (Smock/Uniontown HS) pitched the final inning.

The Rock returns to action on Wednesday when it will host Clarion University in a 5 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park.

SRU travels to Indiana U. of Pa. for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before hosting Bloomfield College of New Jersey in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday (EDITORS: Note game time change for Sunday’s games).

NOTES: The Rock is ranked 11th in this week’s Collegiate Baseball magazine national Division II poll … Rock head coach Jeff Messer recorded his 550th career win when The Rock won the first game of last Friday’s doubleheader vs. California, Pa.
