SRU NAMES NINE FACULTY AS RECIPIENTS OF
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANTS FOR 2003;
FACULTY WILL DELIVERY LECTURES, EXPAND
RESEARCH IN INTERNATIONAL COUNTRIES
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – Nine Slippery Rock University faculty have been
awarded $1,000 each as part of thePresident’s
International Professional Development Grant Program and will use
the funding to support their international travel related to the
presentation of lectures and expand university-related
research.
Grant
recipients are:
Dr.
Jaclyn Gier, associate professor of history, who will present a
paper and deliver a keynote address at the International Mining
History Congress in Hokkaido, Japan, in
September.
Dr.
Paulette Johnson, professor in parks and recreation/environmental
education, to attend an “Environmental Education Evaluation
Methodologies” workshop where she will present papers titled
“The Integration of Environmental Education into
Environmental Protection and Education Agencies” and
“Inclusion of Environmental Education in Teacher Preparation
Programs: A Systemic, Systematic and Sustainable Approach” in
Espinho, Portugal.
Dr.
Thomas Gordon, professor of elementary education/early childhood,
to present a paper at the Annual Conference of the Association of
American Schools of Central America, Colombia, Caribbean and
Mexico, in Panama City, Panama, next October.
Dr.
Jesus Valencia, School of Business professor, who is using his
sabbatical for research in the field of applied institutional
economics in Colombia, South America, beginning in July.
Dr.
Michael Stowe, associate professor of sociology/anthropology and
social work, to visit various social service agencies and
participate in the 13th International Symposium of the
Inter-University Consortium for International Social Development in
Northern and Western India in December.
Dr.
Erica Scott, assistant professor of English, to present a paper
titled “Arising from Exotic Dreams: The Postcolonial World of
Kate Chopin” at an international conference at the University
of Wales in Swansea, Wales, next August.
Dr.
Srinivasa Mani, professor of sociology/anthropology and social
work, to present a paper titled “Culture and Family Planning
Communication: An Examination of Two Communication Strategies in
Rural India” at the 36th World Congress of
International Institute of Sociology in Beijing, China, in
2004.
Dr.
George Brown, associate professor of government and public affairs,
to present a paper titled “Reflections on War and War Crimes:
Japanese Wartime Atrocities in Nanjing and in the Philippines, The
Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Ordinary Men in the
Holocaust, the Case of the My Lai Massacre” at the
Reconsidering Hiroshima/Nagasaki Conference in Hiroshima, Japan, in
June.
Dr.
Joyce Penrose, professor of nursing and coordinator of the Clarion,
Edinboro and Slippery Rock Universities Master of Science in
Nursing Programs, to travel to Port au Prince, Haiti, in June to
explore the feasibility of offering an international health
experience in Haiti to nursing and nurse practitioner
students.
