The Office of Multicultural Programs provides quality programs and events that are designed to enhance the collegiate experience of students and educate the campus community.  All of our programs assist with the retention of a diverse student body and promotes diversity awareness and outreach to the campus community

Jump Start

The Jump Start program at Slippery Rock University has proven to be an effective tool in the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body.  The program is designed to serve as a transition program with its primary goal in assisting students with the acclimation of college life on campus, both academically and socially. New, entering, first-year students are provided one-to-one and group mentoring, cultural, academic, and leadership competency development, academic advisement, and study skills strengthening and support.

Jump Start Mentors  

Building on the Jump Start program, Mentors continue to provide one-to-one and group mentoring to entering, first-year students for the first two semesters of the entire academic year.  The purpose of the mentoring program is two-fold.  One – peer mentors will impact first year students positively, serving as role models, offering suggestions, providing support and encouragement, promoting self-responsibility and self-direction. Two – peer mentors, themselves, gain an invaluable learning experience, as they are provided opportunities for engaging in meaningful work, gain important leadership skills, learn to take responsibility, increase contact with staff, faculty and administration, while gaining senses of self-worth.
