"Study
the past if you would define the future." -
Confucius

By looking at the
development of the myriad of programs and projects presented here,
we hope to inspire others to continue the quest for a sustainable
future. We begin by reflecting upon the agricultural history of the
Slippery Rock area. In early farming,
some of the original agricultural and environmental practices of
the college are discussed. We then move through time to the history
of the current Robert Macoskey center, the Patterson house. After that, we view the life
of Robert A. Macoskey, a man whose
charisma inspired many projects and programs. Macoskey and others
were instrumental in the development of the ALTER Project, then the Harmony House/ Robert A. Macoskey Center, and
finally the Master of Science in
Sustainable Systems. In past
contributors to the vision we point out those who have
volunteered their time, energy and vision to this cause.
It is by exploring the backgrounds of these endeavors that we see
theories expand to meaningful practice. The results come from a
vision, but also come from hard work and dedication of numerous
individuals who have knit themselves into a community who care
deeply about living a life in a sustainable manner.
