Amnesty International: is a worldwide campaigning movement that works to promote all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards.  In particular, Amnesty International campaigns to free all prisoners of conscience; ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisioners; abolish the death penalty, torture and other cruel treatment of prisoners; end political killings and "disappearances", and oppose human rights abuses by opposition groups.  Amnesty International has around a million members and supporters in 162 countries and territories.  Activities range from public demonstrations to letter-writing, from human rights education to fundraising concerts, from individual appeals on a particular case to global campaigns on a particular issue.  Amnesty International is impartial and independent of any government, political persuasion or religious creed.  Amnesty International is financed largely by subscriptions and donations from its worldwide membership.  At Slippery Rock University members assist the national organization by writing letters and trying to help free political prisoners around the world. Our student membership meets every Tuesday during Common Hour (12:30 pm to 1:30 pm) Room 200, Spotts World Culture Building.  To learn more, visit the home web site of Amnesty International.

Law Society at Slippery Rock University is a student organization designed to sponsor the scholastic ambitions of pre-law students.  The activities include bringing in outside speakers to discuss how to better prepare for law school and to discuss the virtues of various schools.  For more information, contact Dr. Walter Powell, at X2432 or Dr. Richard Martin, at X2434.  Our graduates have a great record of being admitted to and being successful in law schools.  For more specifics read about SRU's Pre-Law Program

Sigma Iota Rho: The mission of the Society for International Relations (SIR) is "to promote and reward scholarship and service among students and practitioners of international studies, international relations, global studies, and to foster integrity and creative performance in the conduct of world affairs."  SIR organizes presentations, a film series, and the award-winning Model United Nations team.  It also coordinates trips, public outreach, and opportunities to socialize with people who share an interest in the world and how it works.  SIR meetings and events are open to anyone with an interest in international studies or international relations. We gather at 4:00 Tuesday, in room 202 of the Spotts World Culture building.  For more information, see the SIR website.
