Marjorie Stephenson Scholarships

Marjorie Stephenson, a professor and librarian at Slippery Rock University from 1971 to 1978, made provision in her will for undergraduate scholarships at Slippery Rock University.

Applications from Black American students will receive priority.  Other students will be considered. Financial need will also be a consideration.

Ms. Stephenson's original wishes were to give priority to Library Science students.  However, since SRU no longer offers a Library Science major, applications from students in disciplines reflecting Ms. Stephenson's interests, such as the arts, humanities, social sciences or education will receive priority.

The number of scholarships will depend on the funds available and the qualifications of the applicants.  The maximum award will be $1,000.00; partial awards may be granted.

Criteria:

  1. Student must be an undergraduate who has demonstrated strong academic performance.
  2. Student must have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours at SRU by the conclusion of the current semester.
  3. Students who have transferred more than 36 semester hours to SRU are not eligible.
  4. Awardee must be a full-time student during the time he/she holds the scholarships.
  5. Previous recipients of Stephenson scholarships must reapply and will be considered along with all other applicatns.

To Apply:

Pick up an application form at the Academic Support Services Office, 106B Bailey Library.  Turn in the completed application to the same office by March 15th.  Letters of recommendation are to be sent directly to the Stephenson Scholarship Committee, 106B Bailey Library.  It is possible that the Committee may interview finalists.

Completed Application Consists of:

  1. Completed application form.
  2. Two letters of recommendation from SRU faculty members.  At least one of these must be from a professor with whom you had a class.
  3. A one-to-two page essay on How My College Education Will Help Me In Pursuing My Career Goals.  Please include information regarding campus and community activities and any financial need.
