Biography:

Dr. Istvan Kovacs has been teaching activity and professional theory classes at SRU since 2003. Before joining SRU, Dr. Kovacs spent two years teaching PE at Jozsef Attila High School and ten years teaching in the PETE program, as well as coaching Track and Field at his alma mater, the Hungarian University of Physical Education.

He received his B.S. both in Physical Education and in Coaching at HUPE, and earned his Masters of Education degree in Physical Education at the same institution. He completed his doctoral studies and received his Ph.D. title in biomechanics at Eotvos University in 2001.

Currently, he teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, and upervises graduate practicum projects. He is the coordinator for the NCATE accreditation of the PE department. Dr. Kovacs is also the head coach for the Slippery Rock Aquatic Club, an age-group competitive swimming club.

His research area of interest is biomechanics: mechanical characteristics of muscle contractions and movement analysis related to teaching movement skills.

As an athlete, Dr. Kovacs was a triple jumper, held national age-group records, and competed for the Hungarian National Track Team. Currently, he enjoys riding his bicycle, playing voleyball, tennis, badminton, racquetball, and ping-pong.
