‘COMPUTER BASICS’ CLASS FOR SENIORS IN WEXFORD AREA PLANNED BY SRU

WEXFORD, Pa. – Seniors and retired adults interested in family histories or letters, searching the Internet for information or just wanting to send e-mail, including photographs, to family and friends are being urged to consider a special “Computer Basics” class offered by Slippery Rock University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement.

The six-session, two-hour workshops will be offered at SRU’s North Hills Center, just west of I-79 in Wexford, beginning Oct. 8.

The course will cover a number of basic computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheet applications and how to find information on the World Wide Web. Classes will also offer instruction on creating and sending e-mail messages. The textbook for the course is “For Grandmas Who Do Windows,” by Amy C. Lowenstein, with “Windows” used as a play-on-words for the computer software company Microsoft, maker of its line of “Windows” products.

“SRU’s Institute for Learning in Retirement is a member-directed organization providing lively learning experiences for mature adults who share a love of learning,” explains Dr. Constance Smith, the ILR’s volunteer executive director. “Courses range from learning foreign languages to astronomy, bird and butterfly gardens, international cooking, line dancing, recording oral histories and a host of other subjects,” she adds. The program, which also offers classes on SRU’s main campus, offers four separate courses related to computers to help mature adults keep up on the latest information.

Smith points out, “Retirement is not a prerequisite for ILR membership, nor is prior educational attainment or affiliation with SRU.”

Now in its sixth semester of offering non-credit classes, the program, similar to some 250 nationwide, also includes fieldtrips and a lunch and lecture series. The non-profit organization is affiliated with SRU and the SRU Alumni Association. It is also affiliated with Elderhostel Institute Network. Instructors and facilitators are unpaid volunteers, many of whom are drawn from the membership itself. Those willing to serve as a future instructor should contact the institute.

Fees and related information, including course catalog, registration materials are available at 724-738-1604 or by visiting the SRU Web site at www.SRU.edu/ILR
