The Impact of Constructivism and the New
Pennsylvania Standards on Mathematics and
Science
A
Mini-Conference, November 29-30, 2001, Indiana University of
Pennsylvania
IUP-CETP would like to extend an invitation to
school and college math and science instructors, supervisors and
administrators to attend a two-day conference at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania on the constructivist philosophy and the science
and mathematics standards. The conference will feature Dr. James
Stith, Director of the American Institute of Physics, and David
Gallaher, Member of the Pennsylvania Assessment Committee for the
New Science and Mathematics Standards in Education. The meeting is
proudly co-sponsored by the Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher
Preparation in Pennsylvania (CETP-PA) and IUP's Teaching Education
Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology. This
NSF-funded grant covers the cost of registration, materials, and
intermission snacks and will reimburse school district fees for
replacement personnel to cover the classroom of a participant.
College participants will be able to apply to their local CETP team
for travel, meals, and lodging reimbursement. Teachers will also
receive ACT 48 credits for their participation in the
conference.
Description of Conference:
One of the major concerns to teachers and professors in
Pennsylvania is how the new education standards created by state
educators and law- makers will affect their teaching in K-16
science and mathematics courses. This conference will provide
participants the opportunity to investigate why Pennsylvania
thought it was necessary to create the standards and how the new
requirements will interact with the constructivist
philosophy.
About
CETP-PA:
The Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation in
Pennsylvania is a joint effort of the 14 universities of the State
System of Higher Education (SSHE). CETP-PA was established on the
premise that success and accomplishment are the result of teamwork
and group efforts. This initiative is a deliberate, structured
effort at cooperation, collaboration and support among the 14
universities to effect program changes in science and math teacher
education. It is CETP-PA's intention that, as a result of this
initiative, the science and mathematics teachers graduating from
the 14 campuses of the PA SSHE system will be of the highest
quality. Subsumed in this intent is the collaboration with public
school instructors to strengthen the induction period for new
teachers and the implementation of specific recruitment strategies
to sustain or increase the number of students pursuing careers in
science and math education. It is our belief that, to make any
lasting change in our education programs, we must change the
culture in the K-16 classroom. We define classroom culture as the
interplay between individuals and the written and unwritten rules
that guide their behavior.
About
the Teacher Education Center:
The IUP Teacher Education Center of Mathematics, Science, and
Technology is a collaborative effort of education faculty from the
College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of
Education. The Center unites faculty form these colleges to provide
professional development opportunities for pre-service and
in-service teachers, conduct research and develop interdisciplinary
collaboration to carry out the mission of the Center. This mission
is to promote excellence in cross-disciplinary teaching, learning
and research in the disciplines represented in the Center.
