Bloomsburg University & SSHE-CETP-PA Conference

August 16-18 2001

The local Bloomsburg NSF-CETP-PA team and the statewide collaborative are jointly sponsoring a conference at Bloomsburg University August 16-18. Slippery Rock University mathematics, science, and education faculty are strongly encouraged to attend. K-12 teachers and administrators are welcome, too.

The focus of the conference is constructivist teaching. The following nationally known speakers will present:

Pricilla Laws (Physics)
Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Dickinson College

Deborah Ann Moore (Mathematics)
Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Puerto Rico at
Mayaguez

William R. Robinson (Chemistry)
Professor, Department of Chemistry, Purdue University

Judith G. Scotchmoor (Earth Science)
Director of Education and Public Programs, Museum of Paleontology, UC
Berkeley

Gordon E. Uno (Biology)
Professor, Department of Botany and Microbiology, University of Oklahoma

Besides the speakers, there will be a call for papers to be presented by CETP-PA participants. Each team will have the opportunity to present a report of their past year's work in a poster session. Additionally, there will be special sessions for sharing information on how to make the centers (both physically and virtually) effective. Space will be provided for vendors and publishers of materials used in constructivist pedagogy in science and math.

Funding is available for travel expenses and stipends. Slippery Rock University faculty and K-12 teachers/administrators from surrounding districts should call Patsy Ann Johnson at 724-738-2317 or email patsy.johnson@sru.edu if they would like to attend the conference.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Division of Undergraduate Education
