Bloomsburg University & SSHE-CETP-PA Conference
March 9, 2001 - March 10, 2001
The local Bloomsburg NSF-CETP-PA team and the statewide collaborative are jointly sponsoring a "mini-conference" at Bloomsburg University March 9-10. Slippery Rock University mathematics, science, and education faculty are strongly encouraged to attend. K-12 teachers and administrators are welcome, too.
The focus of the conference is constructivist teaching in chemistry, biology and physics. Nationally recognized innovators, Lillian McDermott (University of Washington, Seattle) in Physics, James Reeves (University of North Carolina, Wilmington) in chemistry, and Anton Lawson (Arizona State University) in biology, will be presenting at the conference. The Friday morning session involves three workshops conducted by each of these guests - the focus will be on college level teaching in each discipline. The Friday afternoon session will
involve "didactic" lecture style presentations by each speaker. These presentations will be followed by a panel discussion of similarities and differences in constructivist teaching in the three disciplines.
To find out more about what these speakers are doing, check out the following web sites:

Lawson = http://sols.asu.edu/faculty/alawson.htm
The Saturday morning session will be a workshop for K-12 educators and all others interested in the teaching of the various subjects at the pre-college level. A single Saturday afternoon session will be a demonstration of the "wireless classroom" by Jim Reeves. UNC-Wilmington is in middle of an initiative involving teaching chemistry, math and computer science using the Jornada handheld computers.
If you have questions about the conference call Emeric Schultz at 570-389-4889 or email eschultz@bloomu.edu. Funding is available for travel expenses and stipends. Slippery Rock University faculty and K-12 teachers/administrators from surrounding districts should call Patsy Ann Johnson at 724-738-2317 or email patsy.johnson@sru.edu if they would like to attend the conference.
