THE ART OF FLAMENCO COMING TO SRU OCT. 15

            SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Flamenco, generally considered the national art form of Spain, will be presented by Flamencos en el Aire, a Washington, D.C., dance artist group, when it visits Slippery Rock University for an   8 p.m. Oct. 15 public performance in Swope Music Hall as part of National Arts and Humanities Month.

           The dance style originated in Andalusia in Southern Spain during the 18th century as the  result of the merging of several distinct cultural traditions.

Members of the ensemble include Anna Menéndez, Edwin Aparicio, Richard Marlow and José Oretea, and their repertoire includes both traditional and original flamenco interpretations. Their SRU performance will feature solo guitar pieces as well dance accompanied by guitar.

The group’s credits include performances at the Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage, Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Spanish Embassy, the Library of Congress and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The free performance is sponsored by the Office of International Initiatives, the College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, the department of modern languages and cultures, the dance department and SRU’s Spanish Club.
