NOV. 3-7 WILL BE GREAT WEEK FOR SAX LOVERS AS SRU OFFERS SPECIAL CONCERTS

          SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Students studying the saxophone take center stage at Slippery Rock University next week with four days of concerts featuring the instrument planned for Swope Music Hall.

          All concerts are at 8 p.m. and under direction of Terry Steele, associate professor of music.

          The week opens Monday [Nov. 3] withJason Kush, an SRU senior from Johnstown, presenting a classical saxophone recital featuring both French and American works.

          On Wednesday [Nov. 5], Steele performs Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" with Panorama, SRU's Steel Drum Ensemble, directed by Dr. David Glover, assistant professor of music.

          On Thursday [Nov. 6], the SRU Sax Quartets takes the stage with two student quartets playing a variety

of classical and jazz styles in a chamber music style. Members of the quartets are: Rich Conrad, alto, of Fleetwood, Tammi Regal, alto, of Portersville, Gianna Stout, tenor, of McClellandtown, Chelle DeLong, baritone saxophone, of Titusville, Patrick Schirf, alto of Altoona, Steve Dexter, tenor, of Osceola, Shawn Smiesko, baritone saxophone, of Saxonburg and Kush on soprano saxophone. A $3 donation will fund music scholarships.

          On Friday [Nov. 7], Schirf, a senior, will present a saxophone recital with classical literature on the first half and jazz combo standards and originals slated for the second half.
