Bachelor of Arts in Spanish for Heritage Speakers of Spanish Progress Sheet 
(30 hours)
Heritage speakers shall be given a comprehensive written and oral exam to verify grammatical competence and oral fluency. This test shall determine if the student should follow the non-native speaker program.
Required Spanish Courses: Prerequisite:
______ 300 Spanish Grammar Review (may be exempted) (every fall) None
______ 400 Advanced Spanish Grammar (every fall) Spanish 300 (if not exempted)
One of the following four civilization courses:
______ 305 Spanish Civilization (even spring) None
______ 306 The Civilization of South America (odd spring) None
______ 307 U.S. Spanish-Speaking Minority Cultures (odd fall) None
______ 308 The Civilization of Mexico/Central America (even fall) None
One of the following literature survey courses:  Offered in rotation; one every spring semester.
______ 330 Spanish Literature: Gen. '98 to Present (even spring) None
______ 332 Spanish American Literature 20th Century and Beyond (odd spring) None
One of the following literature courses: Offered in rotation; one every fall semester.
______431 Spanish Literature: Medieval- 18th Century (odd fall) None
______432 Spanish American Literature: Pre-Columbian-19th Century (even fall) None
Electives: (15 credit hours). May be chosen from any of the courses listed above plus 303 or 340 or 335.
Special Rules for Heritage Speakers:
Heritage speakers will be exempt from the 100- and 200-level courses.  Heritage speakers shall take no more than 6 of the required 30 credits as credit by exam.  It is assumed that the candidate will comply with university policy for admittance regarding English proficiency.  The candidate will be assessed in accordance with the department assessment policy.
Rationale:
Many times heritage speakers show a level of competency in grammar and conversation upon entering our program that corresponds to the ideal graduate of our program. Thus, content-based courses constitute the logical program concentration for these students. courses.
