Bachelor of Science in Education - Certification in Spanish K-12 for Heritage Speakers
of Spanish Progress Sheet
Spanish: 30-33 hours, Education: 37 hours
Heritage speakers shall be given a comprehensive written and oral exam to verify grammatical competence and oral fluency.  If the above test reveals weakness in grammar/and oral communication skills, then the student shall follow the non-native speaker program.  If the student is weak in grammar only, the student will take 300 (in lieu of elective).  If the student is weak in oral communication only (unlikely), the student will be placed in appropriate level communication course.
NOTE: We anticipate poor performance only from a few heritage language learners whose primary language is English, but who may have learned Spanish somewhat at home while being raised by Hispanic parents in the U.S.  Students who successfully complete the above exam shall follow the program below.

 

Required Spanish Courses: (24 hours)

Prerequisite

______ 300 Spanish Grammar Review None.  May be exempt.
______ 350 Spanish Phonetics and Linguistics None
______ 400 Advanced Spanish Grammar Spanish 300 (if not exempted)

 

Two of the following civilization courses:
______ 305 Spanish Civilization None
______ 306 The Civilization of South America None
______ 307 U.S. Spanish-Speaking Minority Cultures None
______ 308 The Civilization of Mexico/Central America None
______ 309 Hispanic Civilization for Elem. Classroom None

 

Two of the following literature courses:
______ 318 Hispanic Literary Heritage (recommended for elementary focus) None
______ 330 Spanish Literature: Gen '98 to Present None
______ 332 Spanish-American Literature: 20th Century and Beyond None

 

One of the following literature courses:  Offered in rotation; one every fall semester.
______431 Spanish Literature: Medieval -18th Century None
______432 Spanish-American Literature: Pre-Colombian- 19th Century None

 

Electives: (6-12 hours).  Any 300 or 400 level Spanish course (including 335) may be used in this block except 301, 302 or 401
