SRU TO OFFER FOUR-WEEK CERTIFICATE ON ‘PROFESSIONAL FLORAL DESIGN’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Those with a flare for color, who enjoy working with flowers and plants and are considering careers in floral design work should be interested in Slippery Rock University’s Office of Continuing Education four-week “Professional Floral Design”  certificate program opening Jan. 5.

Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays throughout January at SRU’s Center for Lifelong and Community Learning in downtown Slippery Rock and at Crighton’s Florist and Greenhouse in Prospect. Classes will be taught by Chris Crighton, floral designer and business owner.

Up-and-coming designers will learn to express emotions and convey feelings through flower arrangements.

In addition to career opportunities in floral shops, the workshops will provide training for work in related areas, including floral departments at other types of businesses, opening your own shop or freelancing for specific work, including weddings.

The program will offer 120 hours of instruction and hands-on learning and will include visits to a church, funeral home and wholesale flower warehouse.

Sessions will cover principles of design, using the color wheel and mechanics, including floral foam, knives, cutters, wires, tapes, pins, baskets, ceramics, mosses, ribbons and other related topics. The sessions will offer ideas on the use of fresh flowers, designing with silk flowers, as well as work in sympathy and wedding designs.

Fees for the program are $1,950, including $475 in consumables.

For details or to register call SRU’s Office of Continuing Education at 724-738-2633.
