SRU’S BAILEY LIBRARY SERIES TO
DETAIL INTEGRATION OF NATIONAL FOOTBALL
LEAGUE
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – “Encounters:
Bailey Library’s Authors and Artists Series” will
present Dr. Alan Levy, SRU history professor and author of
“Tackling Jim Crow: Racial Segregation and Professional
Football” at a 3 p.m. lecture Feb. 23. The public is
invited.
Sponsored
by SRU’s library, Office of Intercultural Programs and the
department of history, the lecture will be presented in the
library’s Special Collections Rooms as part of the
university’s “Black History
Month.”
Levy,
an SRU history professor since 1985, had his latest book, an
examination of the segregation and integration of the National
Football League, published by McFarland and Co., Inc. The program
will examine his research as well as provide an overview of the
league’s current integration status.
Author
of eight books, Levy has completed works on American music,
including a biography of the composer Edward MacDowell, and a look
at baseball legend Rube Waddell. He is completing a biography of
the baseball manager Joe McCarthy.
Bailey
Library’s ongoing series is designed to promote usage of the
library.
