SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Two Slippery Rock University communication students have taken first-place honors in the celebrated Pennsylvania Newspaper Press Association’s 10th Annual Scholastic and Collegiate Keystone Press awards for their work on The Rocket, the weekly student newspaper which also captured top honors for its on-line edition.

Overall, the student-run newspaper received eight Keystone awards, regarded as the state’s most prestigious collegiate journalism honors.

Jason Hunsicker, editor-in-chief of the newspaper and a native of Emmaus, took first-place honors for his column on sportsmanship, took second place for a sports story comparing past and present SRU quarterbacks and received an honorable mention for his editorial detailing an Association of Pennsylvania State, College and University Faculty  protest rally held on campus.

Ed Anicka of New Kensington took first place for his action photo of women’s soccer play.

Hunsicker, Liz Ellis of Mercer, Margaret Hasson of Rochester and Linda Trostle of Freedom captured second place for a photo-story project on campus homecoming, while Pat Leishman of New Castle, Gordy Greenawalt of Greensburg and Rexon Shrestha of Kathmandu, Nepal, took second place for layout and design.
