SRU TRUSTEES RECOMMEND THREE PRESIDENTIAL
CANDIDATES FOR CHANCELLOR’S CONSIDERATION
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --- Slippery Rock
University’s Council of Trustees voted today to recommend
three candidates for consideration by Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education Chancellor Dr. Judy G. Hample and the
system’s Board of Governors in the search for a new SRU
president.
The candidates chosen in a conference call vote
today by SRU’s trustees are:
Dr. Don Betz, provost and vice president
for academic affairs at the University of Central Oklahoma
since 2002. Previously, he served as executive vice president and
vice president of academic affairs at Central Oklahoma; provost and
vice president of academic affairs at Palmer College of
Chiropractic; vice president of university relations,
professor of political science and in other administrative
positions at Northeastern State University. He was political
affairs and liaison officer, Division for Palestinian Rights,
United Nations, has been a visiting professor of international
studies at several universities and was assistant foreign editor of
the Daily Star in Beirut, Lebanon.
He holds a doctorate and a master of arts in
international studies from the University of Denver, and a bachelor
of arts in political science from the University of San Francisco.
He also has studied at Harvard University’s Graduate School
of Education, Sarah Lawrence College, University of
California-Berkeley, New York University’s Arabic Institute,
and in Rome, Italy, with Loyola University.
Dr. Norman
Bregman, provost and vice president for academic affairs and
professor of psychology, Longwood University, since 1997.
Previously, he served as professor and vice president for academic
affairs, University of Evansville; associate provost, Butler
University; professor and dean of the Ellis College of Arts and
Sciences, Henderson State University; professor and department head
at Southeastern Louisiana University and assistant vice president
at George Mason University.
He holds a doctorate in experimental psychology
from the University of Southern California, a master of arts in
experimental psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University and
a bachelor of arts in mathematics from Kean University.
Dr. Robert
Smith, interim president of Slippery Rock University since
2002. Previously, he was provost and vice president for academic
affairs at Slippery Rock University, since 1999; dean of the School
of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Martin,
director of the Tennessee Governor’s School for the
Humanities, executive director of the WestStar Leadership
Development Program, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences at Wichita State University, acting dean of the
University College and Continuing Education at Wichita State,
special assistant in the Office of the Secretary in the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, chair of the Department of
Speech Communication at Wichita State, and debate coach at
Princeton University.
He holds a doctorate in communication theory from
Temple University, a master of arts in interpersonal communication
from Ohio University and a bachelor of arts in speech communication
from Wichita State University. He also has provided communication
and management consultation for a variety of national and
international businesses.
University trustees made their recommendation
following the work of a presidential search committee that has been
engaged in a national search since September. Following three days
of on-campus interviews of each of six candidates, the search
committee recommended to the council that these three candidates be
sent forward for consideration by the chancellor and board of
governors.
“The search committee did a very thorough
job in identifying three excellent candidates to recommend to the
chancellor,” said Ken Blair, the trustee who chaired the
12-member committee representing each of the constituencies on
campus. “The committee was solidly behind this recommendation
to the council of trustees.”
The three candidates will be scheduled as soon as
possible for interviews in the system offices in
Harrisburg.
