What does a committee do? 

  • Guides and evaluates your proposed study and written project
  • Provides quality control
  • Examines you in oral defense

How large should a committee be?

  •  Plan for three to four persons to a thesis committee

What you want

  • Appropriate expertise, with strengths to compensate your weak areas
  • Members who are compatible with each other and with you
  • Members with strong committee skills
  • Your advisor may suggest a content expert if she does not have an extensive background in your topic area
  • Often this individual will be a community-based clinician or expert
  • Members who are likely to be on staff when your finished project is finally ready

What to do

  • Talk to students who have used your prospective committee members as
  • committee members.
  • Interview prospective committee members
