7th Annual
King Day of Service
Monday, January 18, 2010
SRU's 7th Annual King Day of Service is an excellent opportunity to increase diversity awareness, as well as gain community service hours for classes or major that require a community service component.
Students will receive FOUR hours of community service
(12:00 Noon - 4:00 p.m.)
No SRU classes this day!
ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST REPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY UNION LOBBY AT 10:30 A.M.
Lunch and transportation to / from community service locations will be provided for all volunteers.
Volunteer registration forms must be returned via email by January 13, 2010 to:

The 7th Annual Celebration Program will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2010

Essay Contest Topic
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said “An individual has not started living fully until they can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of humanity … Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”

Essay Guidelines:
1. Answer the question: What are you doing for others and also address why it is important for society to help one another
2. Essay must be at least 1,000 words
3. Must be typed and double spaced
4. Must address the topic that is given above
5. Winners will be notified no later than Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Due Date:
All essays are due no later than Friday, December 18, 2009, 4:30PM. Essays can be turned in to the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership located at B-105 University Union. Please make sure you turn in this form with the information filled in above as well as your signature below under the terms of agreement with your essay.
Prizes:
-An opportunity to read part of your essay in front of students, staff, and faculty at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembrance Program
- 1st place will receive $150.00, 2nd place will receive $100.00 and 3rd place will receive $50.00

CIVIL LEADERSHIP AWARDS
Nominations for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Leadership Awards are being accepted until January 11, 2010. Please consider nominating someone who has demonstrated support for civil rights and social justice in words and actions and who demonstrate leadership by motivating others towards understanding and pursuing civil rights and social justice for all people. Nominations and letters of support should be sent to Paula Olivero.
