EDITOR’S ADVISORY                                                                  9-20-04

Thought you might want to hear National Public Radio’s and Fox News Channel’s commentator/journalist Juan Williams as part of his Tuesday [Sept. 21] visit to Slippery Rock University – or grab a quick interview before his 6 p.m. lecture.

Williams, author of the non-fiction bestseller “Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965” and Emmy winner for TV documentary writing, opens the university’s multi-part lecture and discussion series focused on reflections on the 50th anniversary of “Brown v. Board of Education: 50 Years of Progress and Struggle.”  His lecture is set for 6 p.m. in Swope Music Hall.

Brown v. Board of Education is the unanimous 1954 U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision that began bringing an end to “separate but equal” education systems for whites and blacks across the U.S. The case was brought by Oliver Brown who objected to having his 8-year-old daughter, Linda, attend a black school two miles from the family home, while a white school was located just five blocks away. Brown originally sued the Topeka, Kan., school board before the case worked its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The series is designed to focus on societal changes that have resulted from the ruling as well as expose students to the importance of diversity and equality in education.

Williams, host of “America’s Black Forum,” seen on the Fox News Channel, and frequently heard on NPR and as a regular panelist on Fox News Sunday, began his journalism career at The Washington Post. He has written for Fortune, Atlantic Monthly, Ebony, Gentlemen’s Quarter and The New Republic.

Mr. Williams will be available to meet with the press at 5 p.m. in Room 203 of the University Union (next door to Swope.) Those interested should call 724-738-2199.
