MUSICAL ‘MAN OF LA MANCHA’ HEADED TO SLIPPERY ROCK
UNIVERSITY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The five-time Tony
winning musical masterpiece “Man of La Mancha” will
open the Slippery Rock University fall theater season with eight
performances, including two Sunday matinees, under the direction of
Dr. David Skeele, professor of theater.
Curtains
are at 8 p.m. Oct. 8-9 and Oct. 13-16, and 2 p.m. Oct. 10 and Oct.
17 in Miller Auditorium. The Miller Auditorium Box Office will be
open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and will accept
voice mail messages at 724-738-2645. Tickets are $5 general public;
$3 SRU students with ID.
In
addition to the Tony honors for best musical, composer, lyricists,
director, scenic designer and actor, the well-known musical earned
honors from the New York Drama Critics Circle and the Outer Critics
Circle Award. Popular songs from the work include “It’s
all the Same,” “Dulcinea,” “I’m Only
Thinking of Him” and emotional “The Impossible
Dream.”
The
musical, composed by Mitch Leigh with lyrics by Joe Darion and book
by Dale Wasserman, is based on the story of writer Don Miguel de
Cervantes, who enlists the aid of his fellow prisoners in
performing his immortal tale of “DonQuixote.” The lead
– who tilts at windmills – is played by Mark Erickson
of New Wilmington, with his manservant Sancho played by Bret
Hockenberry of Oil City. Duke is played by Sean Argyle of Grove
City and the role of Aldonza is played by Lisa Cifrulak of
Jefferson Hills.
The
set is being designed by Gordon Phetteplace, associate professor of
theater, costumes are by Rebecca Morrice, assistant professor of
theater, and John Pivetz, technical director at Miller, is handling
lighting design. Kevin Smith, assistant professor of music, will
handle music direction and Andy Allison, an SRU graduate, will
serve as vocal director.
