SRU’S ANNUAL ‘HEALTHFEST 2004’ TO OFFER SCREENINGS, WELLNESS PROMOTION

            SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s annual “Healthfest 2004” will again offer an intergenerational opportunity to bring faculty, students, staff and community members together to improve overall health during the 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. event on Oct. 12.

           The free event, held in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center, offers traditional exhibits, screenings and multi-media presentations.

Organized by Brian Mortimer, coordinator of wellness at the Aebersold center, explains the event is held to allow exhibitors from the health-related areas to show off their products while also allowing non-profit health-related agencies the chance to alert the public about health issues and provide health-related screenings for such health problems as high cholesterol, vision, weight problems and diabetes.

Screenings will be offered by the following participants: Butler Memorial Hospital Imaging Center, osteoporosis; Countryside, blood pressure; Exercise Science Society, body composition and blood pressure; Exercise Science / Physiology of Aging, the Senior Fitness Test Battery; Jameson Health System, cholesterol; Jameson Behavioral Health Unit, depression, suicide and stress; United Community Hospital, BMI and body composition analysis; and Wal-Mart Vision Center, vision.

The Center for Personal Growth will offer Reiki demonstrations and the Hospice of Greater Butler will offer a comfort care presentation. Katrina Porter will discuss reflexology and chair massages will be offered for a fee. SRU’s McLaughlin Student Health Center will offer flu shots to SRU students and Vitality Foodservice, Inc., will offer juice samples.

This year’s exhibitors will include: theAmerican Association for Retired People, AIG Valic, Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, Anna Leadem-Counseling & Consultation Services, Athletic Training Association, AVI Food Systems, Belmont Pines Hospital, Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, Butler Lions Club;

 Chiropractic Care Center (Dr. Charles N. Nebel, Chiropractor), Eric Winder D. C., Community Health Challenge, Center for Organ Recovery and Education, Countryside, Denise Houpt – Magnetics, Grove Manor Nursing Home and Personal Care Home, Hospice of Greater Butler Comfort Care, Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office;

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Orchard Manor, Inc., PPHA-CC PA Public Health Association Collegiate Chapter, Quality Life Services, Slippery Rock Senior Center, Sprucewood Commons, Sugar Creek Health Management, Taekwondo America and Weight Watchers

Campus organizations, programs and departments participating are: the Counseling Center, Exercise Science/Worksite Wellness, Gerontology Program, Outdoor Adventures, parks and recreation department, Sports Nutrition Education Resource Center, the Bodybuilding/Fitness Club, the Power Lifting Club and the Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Non-Profit Leadership.
