 What is ROCK Nation

ROCK Nation is a network through which Slippery Rock University supporters can unite and enthusiastically communicate their support of the University and higher education in general. Membership is open to students, current and former faculty and staff, alumni, community members, and friends of the University. Advocates of ROCK Nation will be asked to share fundamental concerns with elected officials, businesses, community groups and prospective friends of the University. By connecting all individual Slippery Rock supporters through one unified group, we hope to make our voice heard and bring continued success to the University.

Budget woes plague Commonwealth
Gov. Tom Corbett recently called for a budget freeze in reaction to lower than anticipated revenues for the current year. As part of his recommendations, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education was requested to freeze 5 percent or $20.6 million of the $412.7 million in state funding it received this year.
While this was certainly surprising and disturbing news, we will approach this challenge as we have others in the past – most notably the 18.3 percent reduction in our 2011-12 state allocation and the loss of federal stimulus funds. At this point, the University is looking at several options but we need more details about the specific requirements for our campus before any decisions can be made. Should there be an across-the-board reduction to each PASSHE institution, SRU’s share would amount to approximately $1.6 million. The chancellor, presidents and Board of Governors are expected to discuss the budget freeze when they meet Jan. 18-19.

As always, I will continue to keep you informed as information becomes available.
