 TLTR MEETING MINUTES

November 9th, 2004

Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Foster (TLTR 2nd year co-convener) and husband Bob welcomed their first child, Grace Ann on Friday, October 29th!

           A.        Report from IT - Dean Lindey

           C.        Technology Advisory Committee - Bette Joseph

                       1.         Met 3 weeks ago

                       2.         TLTR is representing as a non-voting member

                       3.         Faculty Professional Development Day

                                   -           Received 6 proposals

                        4.         Elizabeth Joseph sent the TAC Structure and Responsibilities information sheet to the TLTR mail-list explaining their mission and listing the voting and non-voting members.

             D.        Taskforces - Paul Mullins

1.         If anyone would like to join a taskforce or have any suggestions for additional taskforces, please contact Paul Mullins (x4850 - paul.mullins@sru.edu).

2.         Information Literacy Taskforce

           -           Three members

           -           Paul Mullins will be calling a meeting

3.         Technology Grants Taskforce

           -           Nine members

           -           Meeting on January 7th, 2005

-           Grants should be sent out to all faculty on November 9th, 2004.

-           Faculty who received grants will know by January 10th, 2005.

                       4.         Blackboard Users Group

                                   -           Six members

                                   -           Need to call a meeting

                       5.         Plagiarism Taskforce

                                   -           Trying to get plagiarism software ("Turn-It-In")

-           Implementation of this software will be a very lengthy process.

 II.      Program

         A.        Software Centralization System

1.         Henry Magusiak and Deborah Whitfield presented on a multi-server implementation of the software product "Citrix" that can be used to reduce the cost of software purchase and IT maintenance.  A set number of licenses for the software product are made available to authenticated users from anywhere on the web.

         B.         Computer Science Citrix Implementation                      

1.         How can we do this?

-           Provide Computer Science students and faculty access to PC computer science applications in all labs.

-           How can we provide this without purchasing licenses for all workstations?

-           How can we provide remote access to computer science PC applications?

-           How can we take advantage of existing general labs across campus to provide access to applications?

                       2.         Citrix Solution

-           Provides equal access to Computer Science instructional applications.

                                   -           Cuts cost of additional licensing.

-           Enable easy deployment of Computer Science applications throughout the university system.

-           Extends the classroom and provides off-campus access to faculty and students.

                       3.         What is Citrix?

                                   -           Software Application Server

                                   -           Provides remote access to applications

                                   -           Provides central administration point for applications

-           Provides automated interface to deploy applications to many servers

                                   -           Provides load balancing of servers

                       4.         Cost and Benefits

                                   -           Hardware and Software combined for Citrix $70k

                                   -           Application license $10k

                                   -           Yearly renewal $7k for 200 simultaneous users

                                   -           Students have 24/7 access

                                   -           Spend more time on assignments

                                   -           Less lab maintenance

                                   -           Students have access to MS Software (Office) applications

                       5.         Access Options

                                   -           Citrix web enabled application

                                   -           Average Usage of Students

                                               60-Day Period - 130 Students

                                               2.4 hours per day per user

                                   -           The system automatically logs inactive users off

                       7.         University Solutions

-Purdue University Case Study:  "Citrix Software facilitates learning in a new way for our university.  Using Citrix Software, our students gain access to applications from every corner of the campus, and beyond."  Edward Evans

                       8.         Additional Comments

-           Citrix is currently being used by the Computer Science students a faculty only.

-           Currently have 200 licenses
