EMERGENCY AIR HORN TO BE TESTED APRIL

RESIDENCE HALL STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SEVERE WEATHER
DRILL
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will test a new severe
weather emergency air horn that will be heard throughout the area
for the first time at 7 p.m. Tuesday [April 19].
There
will be groups of three, five-second blasts of the air horn with a
10-second interval after each group. The pattern will be: three,
five-second blasts followed by a 10-second interval, then another
three, five-second blasts and a 10-second interval, continuing for
two minutes.
“This
will be a new sound to area residents since it is new device to our
campus. We want local residents to be prepared for it and to know
that this is a test for the horn and a drill for our campus
community,” explained Ross Feltz, director of university
public relations.
“In
the future, when area residents hear this sound and this pattern,
they will know that severe weather such as a tornado is in the
area, unless they’ve been notified of a scheduled
drill,” Feltz added.
The
drill portion of the test will be confined to SRU’s campus.
Students in the university’s residence halls will participate
by moving to the lowest part of their building when they hear the
first, five-second warning blasts.
After
a brief period following the warning, a 30-second blast will
signify the “all clear.”
“Emergency
preparation and training are extremely important for maintaining an
environment that does as much as possible to keep our community
safe,” said Feltz.
“Bill
Rudloff, our university director of environmental health and
safety, has provided very knowledgeable leadership to bring us into
the National Incidence Management System form of planning. We are
ahead of many in the state in this regard,” said
Feltz.
Overseeing
the drill also will be President Robert M. Smith, Rudloff, Robert
Christy, interim director of University Police; and other
administrators. “Representative of various state and local
departments responsible for emergency preparedness will also be
observing our drill,” Feltz said.
