Objectives: This course is intended for biology majors and other students with an interest in gaining a more in-depth understanding of the biology of disease-causing microorganisms. This course will build upon the material presented in Microbiology (Biol 330). Emphasis will be placed on the characteristics, pathogeneisis, epidemiology, and virulence factors of pathegenic bacteria that allow them to produce a disease state in the host. Students in the course will be expected to integrate information from various sources in order to successfully meet the course requirements. One section of the course is offered during the spring semester of even years.

Prerequisites: Basic biology course and basic chemistry.

Credit Value: 3

Contact Time: Two 50 minute lectures and one 3 hour laboratory per week.

Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course a student should:

• be able to apply general microbiological principles specifically to the study and discussion of pathogenic microorganisms
• will gain an appreciation for the role that pathogenic microorganisms play in our lives
• will be better able to critically evaluate reports in the popular press dealing with issues of relevance to pathogenic microorganisms and health
• will be able to clearly and effectively communicate their ideas concerning pathogenic microorganisms to others
• will be familiar with and able to apply many of the laboratory methods used for the isolation, cultivation, and identification of pathogenic microorganisms
