SRU HOMECOMING ’05 ‘FANTASTIC VOYAGE’
INCLUDES GOLF SCRAMBLE, PARADE, SPORTS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Slippery Rock University will hold its homecoming activities the
week of Oct. 9-14, including a golf scramble, a gameday morning
parade, including the SRU Marching Pride, and the
traditional 2 p.m. football game with The Rock
taking on Millersville University in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. This
year’s theme is “Fantastic Voyage – Rock Around
the World.”
The weekend will include a
homecoming concert with The Clarks and Lil Scrappy. Tickets to the
9 p.m. Oct. 14 concert in the University Union are on sale now. SRU
students may purchase up to two tickets with an SRU ID for $10
each; general admission is $20. Tickets are available at the SGA
Bookstore in the University Union or may be charged to a credit
card by calling 724-738-2104.
Homecoming weekend will open with
a Fall Classic Golf Scramble beginning with a shotgun start at noon
Oct. 14 at Oakview Golf Course sponsored by the SRU Alumni
Association. Registration opens at 10:30 a.m. with proceeds going
to the alumni association’s student scholarship funds and the
Russell Wright Alumni House Expansion Project. A campuswide pep
rally is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at Old Thompson Field, including
crowning of the 2005 homecoming king and queen. The SRU Marching
Pride, members of the football team, coaches, cheerleaders and
others will participate. Fireworks will follow as will the
homecoming concert.
A former student leaders’
breakfast, hosted by the alumni association’s board of
directors, will take place at 8 a.m. Oct. 15 at the alumni house
prior to the 10 a.m. homecoming parade kickoff. The parade will
travel from the Slippery Rock Plaza to Franklin Street into the
downtown, then left on Main Street coming to Morrow Way then
disbanding in the Russell Wright Alumni House Parking Lot. The
parade will include the SRU Marching Pride and the Slippery Rock
and Karns City high school bands.
A pre-game “Alumni Fiesta
Tent” will follow the parade offering food, decorations,
games, prizes and giveaways is planned for 11:30 a.m. near N. Kerr
Thompson Stadium. University academic departments will also set up
reunion tents near the soccer field. SRU’s Black Action
Society will sponsor a “Homecoming Party” beginning at
10 p.m. in the University Union.
Other athletic events for the day
include the SRU field hockey team against Millersville at 10 a.m.;
SRU women’s soccer takes on Clarion at 2 p.m.; the SRU
men’s water polo team takes on Gannon at 4 p.m.; the SRU
alumni lacrosse game is at 2:30 p.m.; and the SRU volleyball team
takes on IUP at 7 p.m.
