SRU DANCE DEPARTMENT TO SHOWCASE
STUDENTS, FACULTY GUESTS AT FALL CONCERT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University dance department will showcase
students, faculty and guest artist at its annual fall concert set
for 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in Swope Music Hall and offering
styles ranging from jazz to Bronx rocking.
Tickets are
$2 general admission and may be purchased from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Mondays through Fridays at the Miller Auditorium Box Office, or at
the door.
The concert
will feature the work of dance faculty Ursula Payne, Teena Custer
Jaya Mani, guest artist Princess M’hoon Cooper and SRU dance
majors.
Payne custom
created “Shield” for senior dance majors Erin Killinger
of Beechcreek and Valerie Lacy of Lock Haven. The associate
professor says she wanted to “make something on them, for
them, that challenges their technique and
artistry.”
Custer
created “Be-girl Diaries” for students from her
“Jazz II” class. The work draws on her extensive
research of hip-hop styles, including Bronx rocking, Brooklyn up
rocking and b-girling. The work features Stephanie Frey of Irwin,
Julianne Bobby of Butler, Samara Bailey of New Castle and a guest
appearance by Custer. Students from Mani’s world dance course
will present an Eastern India dance in the Bharatanatyam
tradition.
Guest Artist
Princess M’hoon Cooper spent a week on the SRU campus
teaching classes and creating a new work for students. As an
African-American choreographer, she challenged students to absorb
her aesthetic style which derives from African rhythms, modern
dance and jazz. Her work deals with humanity’s spiritual path
in face of contemporary struggles.
Student
choreographers will present a range of modern dance works. The
choreographers have participated in a creative process during fall
semester under the artistic direction Ursula Payne, associate
professor of dance.
