SRU FLUTE CHOIR, CHAMBER FLUTES TO
RELEASE FIRST CD AT SUNDAY CONCERT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University Flute Choir and Chamber
Flutes will release their first CD titled "Flute Garden" as part of
a 7:30 p.m. Sunday [Dec. 4] concert in Swope Recital
Hall.
The CD under the
direction of Stacey Steele, assistant professor of music, was
recorded in May and will be available prior to and following the
concert as well as from the SGA Bookstore in the University Union.
Steele points out, “The decision to record a CD was
made because of the large number of very strong players
participating in the flute program spring semester.” More
than 20 students joined in the recording session.
Among the nine
selections featured on the CD, $10, are the easy listening
“Dawn of Peace,” by Mark Pope, and “Simple
Gifts,” arranged by Ricky Lombardo, to “The Rose
Cottage” and “Hiawatha and the West Wind,” both
by Catherine McMichael. The jazzy “That’s
Plenty,” arranged by Bill Holcomb, are featured along with
two of the choir’s all-time favorites “Monochrome
V” by Peter Schickele, and “Silver Winds in the
Night” by Jackson Berkey, which will be included in
Sunday’s concert.
Joining the
University Flute Choir for Sunday’s concert will be
returning alumni flutists as well as music students Erica Arnold of
Reinhold on piano, Scott Dawson of Pittsburgh on bass and mandolin,
Jared Negley of Butler on bass, Justin Chesarek of Renfrew on
percussion, Ellen Gross of Emmaus on guitar, and Mike Zeiler of
Natrona Heights as Santa Claus and narrator.
Highlights of
the diverse program include a "surround sound" opening number
titled “Psalm 19” by Baroque composer Benedetto
Marcello, Mozart's “Overture to the Magic Flute” and
the newly published “Legend of the Sleeping Bear” by
McMichael telling the Native-American story of the
majestic sand dunes along Lake Michigan. Also featured
will be a depiction of school children during recess titled
“Tag” by David Wells.
This year the
flutists will also venture into the world of Celtic music, offering
a medley of Irish folk tunes arranged by Steele. Two pieces of
contrasting styles, a musical version of McMichael’s
“The Night Before Christmas” narrated by Santa,
followed by an arrangement of “Silent Night”
titled “Silver Winds in the Night” are also included in
the program.
Tickets are
$3 for the general public with all students admitted
free.
