Opportunities in
Gerontology
- Student Gerontological Society
(SGS) –Affiliated with the Gerontological Society
of America (GSA), this student professional organization is devoted
to raising awareness of issues of aging on campus and in the
community. Students participate in the campus-wide
Healthfest in October, organize the annual Ann T.
Bicknell Scholarship and Recognition Dinner in April, and
attend national and regional conferences. Other activities
include: community outreach activities, curriculum committee, and
program marketing.
- Sigma Phi Omega (SPO)
– Many students involved in the SGS are also members of
SPO. This national honorary in gerontology recognizes
students’ exemplary scholastic accomplishments in the field
of aging. Undergraduate students with a QPA of 3.3 or above
are eligible to apply and graduate students with a QPA of 3.5 or
above are also eligible.
- Scholarships – The
Ann T. Bicknell Scholarship recognizes students who have made
significant contributions within the field and study of
gerontology. Each spring, from a pool of applicants, one
student is selected to receive this honor. The amount of the
scholarship is based on the accrued yearly interest earned from the
invested funds. Applications are available in the Gerontology
Program office (216G BSB) and must be received by March 15 of each
year.
- Student Awards – The
American Society on Aging and the National Council on Aging
annually awards undergraduate students for exemplary original work
in an aging related conference theme. Application materials
need to be received by October 15th of each
year.
- Sponsorships –
Students within the Gerontology Program who hold officer positions
within SGS or who have made significant contributions to the
Program may be eligible to receive full or partial sponsorships to
national and local conferences on gerontological issues.
- Field Experience
– Gerontology students have the opportunity to conduct
internships as a component of their major. This is the major
internship may substitute for the minor internship, if
appropriate. Opportunities to volunteer or serve the elderly
in numerous capacities are available in the community.
- Graduate Assistantship (GA)
–A graduate assistantship is available in Gerontology.
Graduate students are normally hired for two-year appointments,
working 8.75-17.5 hours per week during the academic year. A
tuition waiver and stipend is included with the appointment.
- Resource Room – The
Resource Room houses books, journals, videotapes and equipment for
use by students pursuing gerontology. A large conference
table is also made available to students to hold meetings (as
needed).
