‘CAPITOL STEPS’ TO PERFORM APRIL
1
AT SLIPPERY ROCK
UNIVERSITY; NON-PARTISAN HUMOR
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- No Washington, D.C.,
government figure will be safe from teasing when the comedy troupe
Capitol Steps performs a combination of songs and skits April 1 at
Slippery Rock University as part of SRU’s ING Performing Arts
Series.
Over the past 25 years, the musical satire group
has recorded 25 albums, appeared on “Good Morning
American,” “The Today Show,” “20/20,”
“Entertainment Tonight, “CNN’s Inside
Politics” and National Public Radio’s “All Things
Considered.” They’ve performed for five U.S.
presidents, six if you include Hillary (example of its
humor).
SRU’s show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Miller
Auditorium. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for those over 62 or
older or 17 and under and $7 for SRU students. Limited seating is

About Capitol Steps
U.S. Senate staffers formed Capitol Steps in 1981
as a means for poking fun at the people and places of Washington,
D.C. The current group,
taken together, has worked at 18 congressional offices for a
collective 62 years on The Hill.
Although its latest album is titled
“Four More Years in the Bush Leagues,” the
group’s Web site describes its humor as non-partisan, such
as: "Typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party.
Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That's what
we call the two-party system."
Many of its songs are lyrical parodies of
hits such as Elton John’s “Don’t Go
Breakin’ My Heart.” Capitol Steps performs it as a barb
against President Bush called “Don’t Go Fakin
You’re Smart.” To parody John Kerry, the group sang,
“I’ve Taken Stands on Both Sides
Now.”
The group updates its material
constantly to reflect current events. The group performs
nationwide, always with at least five singers.
SRU launched the ING Performing
Arts Series last fall to offer arts entertainment for the whole
region. Rockapella, composer Marvin Hamlisch and the Nai Ni Chen
Dance Co. have appeared.
Theatreworks USA’s production of the
Junie B. Jones series of books by Barbara Parks will offer a
performance May 19 at SRU. Clever design sets, assorted styles of
original music, and spirited cast members are hallmarks of
this production for children.
