SRU PHYSICAL EDUCATION
FACULTY RANDY NICHOLS RECEIVES PE4LIFE’S EXCELLENCE IN
ADVOCACY-EDUCATION AWARD
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– For promoting physical education on a national level and
creating a new outreach program at Slippery Rock University,
physical education faculty member Randy Nichols has received the
Excellence in Advocacy-Education award from PE4Life.
“Randy
Nichols’ teaching values exemplify PE4life values,”
said Anne Flannery, president and
chief executive officer of PE4life, a nonprofit organization
promoting daily exercise for children. “Randy has
incorporated the PE4life Training Manual as a required text for his
graduate-level classes and created a class on the use of technology
in physical education, including pedometers, heart rate monitors
and fitness assessment programs. He ideally represents what
we need to achieve our mission: college faculty members who
are committed to teaching the next generation of physical educators
a health-and-wellness-based approach to physical
education.”
The PE4life Excellence in
Advocacy-Education award goes to individuals or organizations that
have worked to advance the cause of physical education in the
education field on a local, state or national level, she
said.
Nichols,
assistant professor of physical education, was honored for
developing “Make A Change” at SRU. The project requires
students to promote physical education in their home school
districts by identifying barriers and pursuing grants to develop
expanded programs for students in kindergarten through grade
12.
“It is
truly an honor to be recognized with this award,” said
Nichols. “Each year my primary goal is to prepare my
students to play a part in providing opportunities for others to
become physical activity enthusiasts and to lead healthy, active
lives. PE4life has been a driving force for me, providing
numerous resources and educational opportunities for my
students.”
Nichols was
honored, along with other award winners, during the National PE Day
Awards Dinner, held in Washington, D.C.
Nichols,
a faculty member at SRU for 10 years, teaches fitness education,
assessment strategies, health-related fitness education and
assessment and supervises student teaching. He is SRU’s
assistant baseball coach and an SRU graduate.
