SRU JAZZ ENSEMBLE READIES FOR SUMMER
TOUR
OF SWITZERLAND, THE NETHERLANDS, GERMANY AND
FRANCE
SLIPPERY ROCK.
– There will be plenty of “fireworks” July
4 when the Slippery Rock University Jazz Ensemble, under the
direction of Dr. Stephen Hawk, associate professor of music, leaves
Pittsburgh for the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux,
Switzerland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands, as
part of a 12-day summer tour.
The trip will take
the 19-member broup to Paris and Heidelberg, Germany.
The SRU musical group is
one of only four collegiate jazz ensembles selected from more than
65 auditioning via CD, band biography and photo. It is the first
such ensemble from Pennsylvania ever invited.
“We are
honored to be selected from among the finest jazz ensembles in the
United States and the world to perform at the two most prestigious
and historic jazz festivals in existence,” says Hawk in
praising the hard work of ensemble members.
The SRU group will
play jazz works written by outstanding jazz composers and
arrangers, including Thad Jones, Gordon Goodwin, Pat Metheny, Rob
McConnell, Mike Tomaro and Michael Philip Mossman. Some of their
featured numbers will be “Big Dipper,” “My Funny
Valentine,” “Afro Blue,” “Count Bubba's
Revenge,” “Suite Sandrine,” “Del
Corazon” and “It's Just Talk."
The group departs
Pittsburgh July 4, arriving in Paris the following day and offering
a concert at the 100+-year-old Luxembourg Gardens bandstand. On
July 8, the ensemble plays in Beaune, France, then moves to
Switzerland on July 9 for the Montreux Jazz Festival performances
the following day and July 11. A visit to Grindelwald on July 12
followed by travel to Heidelberg for a performance and then to
Rotterdam, Holland, for a July 15 performance at the North Sea Jazz
Festival, sponsored by the International Association for Jazz
Education, which concludes the schedule.
The group returns
home July 16.
