Prescribed Contraceptives

Women interested in the birth control pill, depo provera, or vaginal ring must first attend an educational session, entitled Options, conducted by the office of Health Promotion(you may call student health services for more information). After attending this session students will be able to decide which method, if any, is best suited for their contraceptive needs.

Following the Options program, students may schedule an individual appointment with a nurse practitioner. She will discuss your choice with you and make an appointment for a physical exam and pap smear, if needed. The Student Health Services has oral contraceptives(the pill) at a reduced cost, while other methods such as depo provera(the shot), or vaginal ring can be prescribed and purchased at a pharmacy.

There is a fee for oral contraceptives.. This is non-refundable. There is an additional fee for the pap smear which may be billed or covered by insurance.

Emergency Contraception(ECP)

What is it?
A sequence of contraceptive hormones taken within a specified time frame to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected vaginal intercourse.
  • a condom broke or slipped off
  • you were forced to have unprotected vaginal intercourse
  • your diaphragm or cervical cap slipped out of place
  • you forgot to take your birth control pills
  • you are not using any form of birth control

When do I use it?
ECP should be used within 72 to 120 hours of unprotected vaginal intercourse. The longer the delay, the increased risk that it will not be effective

There is a fee for this service.
