at Slippery Rock University go on sale Monday, [Aug. 14], the
opening event for the university’s 2006-2007 Performing Arts
Series. The folk group has released more than 30 albums and is
expected to perform a number of hits, including “Lemon
Tree” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.”
Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for those 62 and
older or 17 and under, and $8 for SRU students. The concert begins

Almost 50 years after
“Tom Dooley” shot to the top of the charts, the
Kingston Trio is still on the road 30 weeks a year. Originally from
San Francisco’s North Beach club scene, the folk group
enjoyed unprecedented record sales in the 1950s and ‘60s
following hits such as “M.T.A” and “Try to
Remember.”
The trio’s current
line up consists of George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty.
Like earlier incarnations, they play acoustic guitars and
banjos.
Grove has been a member of
the Trio for 28 years, citing the group’s 1983 performance at
Carnegie Hall as a career highlight. He recently relocated from Los
Angeles to Las Vegas and received a graduate degree in jazz
composition from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Zorn bought his first
guitar in 1958 and began performing professionally in the early
1960s. His career has included USO tours to South Korea, Japan,
Thailand, Libya, Europe and the Caribbean. Dougherty has been
playing and singing folk music for nearly 40 years, joining the
Trio in 2002.
Subscriptions for
SRU’s entire Performing Arts series, including appearances by
Rockapella on Dec. 2, the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops on Feb. 7, the
Duquesne University Tamburitzans on March 30 and a separate
performance of “Seussical” on May 20 are available as
well. Call 724-738-2091.
