Members of the Slippery Rock University Physical
Education Department F.I.T. Club teamed up with the Pennsylvania
Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA) for the Highmark
Childhood Obesity Summit and Bounce Convention at the David L.
Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Andrew
Morrison, Gina Holzworth, James Resig, Leann Hastings, Jessica
Peconi, Casey Hall, and Dr. Traci Zillifro represented Slippery
Rock University on September 16, 2006. This summit was
designed to inspire families to take action against obesity.
The SRU students and faculty presented activities for children
using pedometers, heart rate monitors, hiking, backpacking, and
mountain biking equipment, and trust building
activities.
The Bounce Convention was held to educate the
public on different methods to fight childhood obesity. The
summit brought together a variety of stakeholders with diverse
perspectives – such as physicians, community leaders,
educators and policymakers – to showcase and discuss
collaborative solutions. This convention was aimed at uniting
communities to make a healthy impact and combat the growing
childhood obesity problem. The convention was free to the
public. The exhibition drew thousands of parents, children,
educators, and many other influencers.
