Pittsburgh Symphony Pops to perform Feb. 7 at
Slippery Rock University
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Pittsburgh
Symphony Pops will bring their high-energy style to Slippery Rock
University Feb. 7, for a performance featuring fan-favorite
traditional and contemporary selections.
The concert will feature well-known figures from music and
literature including "Romeo and Juliet" from William Shakespeare's
drama and four selections from award-winning composer John
Williams' film score for "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."
Music from George Gershwin's folk opera "Porgy and Bess" will
recreate the atmosphere of the fictional village Catfish Row in the
Old South.
Daniel Meyer, resident conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony, will
conduct the 8 p.m. concert in Miller Auditorium. The complete
program includes:
| Hector Berlioz |
Overture Le Carnaval Romain ["Roman Carnival
Overture"] |
| Georges Bizet |
Suite No. 1 from "Carmen" |
| George Gershwin |
Selections from "Porgy and Bess" |
| John Williams |

Meyer, who selected the pieces, is known for creative programming
and a passion for connecting with audiences. He recently developed
a new series of Tiny Tots concerts based on the popular children's
books to promote music and literacy.
The
public, especially teachers, is invited to join Meyer for a free,
6:30 p.m. panel discussion about arts education curriculum for
elementary schools. The discussion will be at SRU's Russell Wright
Alumni House. Several SRU music and education faculty will serve as
panelists.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Pops appearance is the third of five events
in the Slippery Rock University Performing Arts Series. The first
two concerts sold out. The Duquesne University Tamburitzans will
appear March 30, followed by “Seussical,” a special
event for families May 20. Tickets are available for these
performances.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for those 62 and older and 17 and
under, and $8 for SRU students. Call 724-738-2091.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Pops and residence project is partially
supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a
program developed and funded by the Heinz Endowments; the William
Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and The Pew
Charitable Trusts; and administered by Mid Atlantic Arts
Foundation.
