Opera Orientation: Samson & Dalila              OperaOrnSam

G. Warren Smith

If you plan to attend Saint-Saens' opera, 'Samson & Dalila' (or if you simply are curious about the opera), join us for this brief orientation.  First conceived as an oratorio, the story comes from the Old Testament.  The violence and erotic extravagance of the folk hero -- with its exotic color, reversal of patriarchal strength and catastrophic end -- provide the framework to contrast Hebrew chants against the sensuous music of the pagan Philistines, Dalila's voluptuous songs and the wildly oriental Bacchanale.

Pearl Harbor Attack: Was It Faulty Japanese Strategy?               PearlHbr
