» Students launch campus-based Narcotics Anonymous group
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Graduate students in Slippery Rock University’s addiction counseling program have launched a 12-step Narcotics Anonymous support group. “It’s a Brand New Day” provides free and confidential group meetings to those struggling with addiction.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – David Glover, a music faculty member who teaches percussion at Slippery Rock University, has written an article about college drumming that will be published in the January issue of Modern Drummer Magazine. 

» SRU Army ROTC Challenge Team earns regional competition honors
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The culmination of six weeks of six-day-a-week training paid off for the Slippery Rock University Army ROTC Ranger Challenge team when it recently captured second place in its tier and third place overall in the annual 2nd Brigade Eastern Region Ranger Challenge.

» SRU Theatre readies 'This is Our Youth' for November opening
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  –  Kenneth Lonergan’s “This is Our Youth,” a two-act serial comedy/drama examining the lives of three young people in New York’s Upper West Side, will be presented as the second show in Slippery Rock University’s theatre department series. The show runs Nov. 14-18.

» Annual SRU celebration honors Native American culture
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will partner with the Pittsburgh-based Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center for the second annual celebration of Native American cultures Nov. 8. The event will include displays of traditional dancing, storytelling, singing and drumming.

» SRU education dean earns 2007 Teacher Education award
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Jay Hertzog, dean of the College of Education at Slippery Rock University, has been named Pennsylvania Teacher Educator for 2007 by the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators. Hertzog is a respected expert on middle school education and an informed and concerned advocate for students and teachers.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Justin Brown, a Slippery Rock University freshman, has received several awards for “The Real Enslavement,” a Web site he co-created that examines the legacy and enduring problem of human slavery.

» Teaching violin, viola by day; featured soloist by night
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – By day he’s Warren Davidson, an instructor of music who teaches violin and viola and conducts of the Slippery Rock University Symphony Orchestra. But at night, he takes bow in hand slips into his black tie and tux and becomes featured soloist who plays the subtleties of such respected composers as Max Bruch with the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra.

» SRU experience helps graduate land Federal Emergency Grant
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Larry Boggs, a May 2007 Slippery Rock University exercise science and biology graduate, used his exercise science education to write a Health and Wellness Assistance for Firefighters Grant, offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, that has garnered $61,000 for the Stoneboro (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Co.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Elaine Jewart, a 1966 Slippery Rock University graduate who owns one of the oldest gymnastics schools in the country, has been honored as an outstanding woman in the region by the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania.

» SRU students compete for Williamson Memorial Scholarship
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Fifteen Slippery Rock University voice students will vie for the top honor in the 15th Annual Chad Williamson Memorial Scholarship Competition at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Swope Music Hall. The competition is one of the most popular events in the University’s music department, said Maribeth Knaub, music department chair.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Bailey Library has launched a Web site   chronicling the fire that destroyed the original North Hall 70 years ago today. The all-girls residence hall burned to the ground, although everyone escaped.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Four Ukrainian educators will visit Slippery Rock University Thursday for a first-hand look at its teacher-preparation programs and to explore the possibility of internships and other educational collaborations. A representative from the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine will be on campus as well.

» SRU to sign partnership with Japanese high school
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University on Tuesday will finalize its first partnership with a Japanese high school, Jissen Joship Gakuen, an all-girls school in Tokyo. The partnership will make it easier for Japanese students to attend SRU for their higher education.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – U.S. Navy Capt. Kathlene Contres, a 1977 Slippery Rock University allied health graduate, has been named the recipient of the 2007 HENAAC Santiago Rodriguez Diversity Award. She will receive the award later this month in San Diego.

» SRU Alumni Association taps Laughners as homecoming parade marshals
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Carl Laughner, a member of the Slippery Rock University class of ’49 and former faculty member and retired director of the SRU Alumni Association, and his wife, Norma Watson Laughner, a 1948 SRU graduate and former alumni association secretary, will serve as this year’s marshals for the University’s annual homecoming parade.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Richard Korb, Columbia University professor of German, will offer a lecture titled “Remembering Forgotten Victims: Thoughts on the Exhibit: ‘Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945’” at Slippery Rock University’s 14th annual Holocaust Remembrance Program.

» Walwik Freedom of Speech Lecture series features namesake's son
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s fourth annual Ted Walwik Freedom of Speech Lecture, named for SRU Professor Emeritus Theodore Walwik, will feature his son and SRU graduate Joseph Walwik, now an associate professor of history at Dakota State University.
